Ruger 10/22

I have recently found a new toy to play with. I used to have a Ruger 10/22 many years ago. For some dumb reason I decided to sell it. I made a profit on the sale, but always wanted another one. Well, I found one at a good price at a local pawn shop. It had not been treated well. The previous owner had put it into a Bullpup stock. Whoever had it had no idea of how to work on firearms. The gripstock had been cut off with what looked to have been a machette. It was all chewed up and jagged. Then, instead of drifting out the front sight, they ground it off!! Well, did some bartering with the shop owner and walked out with it.
First thing I did was bring it home, disassemble it, and removed the parts I didn't need (bullpup stock & red dot scope and barrel). I checked out the barrel and other than the ground off sight, it was in good shape. I decided to keep it in case I ever need it. I tore down the receiver and inspected the internal parts. They all looked functional, but I knew I could do better. The next step was to visit Midway USA and find some new parts. Here is some pics of my Ruger 10/22 as it is right now.

And here is a few of the targets from this set up. The first target is a 5-shot group at 25 yds. The second target is my first 10-shot group at 50yds. The two flyers were from a clean barrel and before I adjusted the impact to the right. The following group is 8 rounds!!

I am happy!! I am sure that I can do better and I know the rifle is more accurate than I at this point. I broke the barrel in by running a bore snake through it after every round for the first 5 rounds. Then ran it again after 5 rounds. Then I set up to sight in the scope. I bore snaked it every 5 rounds afterward up until I got 25 rounds through the new barrel. I don't know if it is necessary, but I figured it couldn't hurt. I suppose I was right!

Now. I know you are all just waiting in anticipation to find out what I used to make this set up. Right? Well, below is a list and a link to all the components I used to make this build. If parts are not listed below, then they are the original factory parts. I still may add a few more things as time goes on, but if the accuracy stays as it is, I don't know that I will need them.

Well I finally got my Boyd Baracuda stock in. Bought it off Ebay. I know, I know. Ebay is anti-gun and I disagree with their policies too. However, sometimes it is the only place you can find a decent deal. The seller is not anti-gun so I guess it cancels out in some weird way. PayPal is anti-gun as well but until somebody comes up with a better service, I guess I'll have to use them as well.

I received the stock, almost 4 weeks after paying for it. Yeah, I left neutral feedback for the seller. His service and communication sucks like a $3.00 whore, and he shipped it without insurance when I paid for insurance, but the stock was as described, so I left the best feedback possible. The stock was unfinished and rough sanded but overall the workmanship was excellent. The inlay for the action was perfect! I sanded it down with fine grain sandpaper and applied 4 coats of finish. Then followed it up with a couple coats of stock conditioner. I am very happy with the way it finished out. I still need to drill and install the sling studs and make a custom sling, but that will come soon.

I included a few pics of the set up. The first set is with the factory stock barrel and receiver of my SS or "grey" rifle. The second set of pictures is with my Adams & Bennet bull barrel target setup, (the same one as in the pictures at the top of the page). Since the Baracuda barrel works with both the factory and the Bull barrel I tried both to see which setup I liked the best. After a full family review and comment period, I believe I will keep the Barricuda stock with the factory barrel for now. I may in the future get a Bull barrel for this rifle, but if I do, I will probably go with a .17 Mach 2 set up. That will be a while, as they are totally backordered everywhere and I am not ready to fork out $300 for a barrel right now anyway. Take a look at the pics and let me know which you think works better as "eye candy".
